A week is a long time in football

This time last week we were staring down the barrel, third from bottom with a worse record than at the same stage last year, writes Saddlers blogger Mark Jones.

But, to borrow another cliché, seven days is a long time in a relegation battle.

Thankfully the three points gleaned against a fairly useless Wycombe eased some of the pressure (as well as ensuring we’d get a new penalty taker) and made the trip to Scunny take on even greater importance. Especially given the unlikely, but typically Walsall-esque, occurrence of everyone else in and around the drop zone winning on the same day.

I can’t understate the importance of Tuesday’s result at Glanford Park.  A second successive six-point win, a second successive clean sheet and another influential performance from the Belgian boy. Signing up Florent Cuvelier until May might just prove to be one of our season’s better moves.

We’re now averaging  a point a game, I reckon we need to up that by at least a third to be safe. As with last year, we’ll need to graft and scrape and it won’t be pretty, but at least we now have a platform.

I’ve taken heart from the last two games, I expect the players to take inspiration from the results of the last week too. Time to kick on boys.

Finally I can’t let the bout of electronic stupidity that overwhelmed Manny Smith and also Jamie Patterson last week pass without comment .

Obviously I write stuff that goes on the Internet meself, although not the heat of the moment, unedited literary works of the Social Networking sites. I always try to stick to the rule that I won’t write anything about someone that I wouldn’t actually say to their face. (So you can imagine the conversations I’d have with Colin Lee or the landlord).

This approach may or may not have prevented the ignorant , offensive drivel that spewed out into the public domain last weekend; but some kind of self-editing strategy is always useful to have up your sleeve.

Or alternatively they could just try doing something more productive with their ‘downtime’.

I’m glad the thoroughly unpleasant matter has produced an apology, a bit of humility and hopefully a huge amount of growing up. It is 2012 after all and you are very privileged to do what you do boys, please don’t ever forget that.

Agree with the most part, however there were sadly a number of “tweets” deleted prior to the offensive remarks….until we know what they were I refuse to hang Manny out to dry!

I agree in part desben, but when our club have been all high and mighty about what people say in reference to them, including just before Christmas on twitter, they make a rod for their own hypocritical backs.

    Appropriate? Really?

From what we know there was one tweet made to the players that commented on their performances for the club. For the tweets that came back from the players were disgraceful.
Im glad the club have acted and both parties have agreed to stop on an apology – it could have been taken further!
Lets concentrate now on the football…..
