Time to map out a plan for Villa's future

Walsall out of the FA Cup on penalties
Tuesday 13th December 2011, 10:30PM GMT.
Walsall crashed out of the FA Cup on penalties after a shocking display against Dagenham.
Alex Nicholls, Claude Gnakpa and Lee Beevers all missed from the spot to send the Saddlers out 3-2 on penalties to the Football League’s bottom club, following a goalless draw after extra-time.
The Daggers now host Millwall in the third round and Walsall will entertain Bournemouth in League One that weekend.
The Saddlers were awful, failing to impress or impose themselves on a wretched Dagenham team who have lost nine straight League Two games.
A head injury to Manny Smith late in the second-half also saw the hosts reduced to 10 men, as the defender was carried off and they had used all their substitutes.
The defender, who was knocked out at Millwall in 2009, received a kick to the head in the Dagenham area and needed seven minutes of treatment.
Smith was sitting up when he left the field but is likely to be a doubt for Saturday’s trip to Chesterfield.
Darryl Westlake returned after six weeks out with ankle ligament damage for the suspended Mat Sadler and Anton Peterlin replaced on-loan Middlesbrough winger Andy Halliday.
The Saddlers lined up 4-3-3 with Alex Nicholls and Jamie Paterson flanking central striker Jon Macken, but it was the Daggers who settled the quicker.
Goalkeeper Jimmy Walker saved from Abu Ogogo and Brian Woodall, while Nicholls’ low effort was easily claimed by Chris Lewington during an instantly forgettable first-half.
The biggest moment of note was when birthday boy Oliver Lancashire pulled up with a hamstring injury – almost letting the Daggers in – 10 minutes before half-time.
It was harsh on the defender, who had impressed recently, but captain Andy Butler returned to the biggest cheer of a dire first 45 minutes.
The second started with barely a whimper but Peter Gain’s looping effort from Dagenham’s quickly worked free kick just cleared Walker’s bar.
The Saddlers – once again devoid of tempo and inspiration – struggled but finally drew a decent save from Lewington when he tipped Macken’s drive wide.
But they were hit again from the resulting corner when Smith was stretchered off, after being knocked down by a kick to the head 12 minutes from time.
The defender was given seven minutes of treatment before leaving on a stretcher, although he was sitting up and conscious as he was carried off.
It meant 10 minutes of injury time – which saw Gain head over, Claude Gnakpa glance wide and Anton Peterlin fire over.
Extra time ensued and Macken’s free kick whistled over but the game went to penalties.
Macken scored before Nicholls and Gnakpa missed and Walker saved from Richard Rose.
George Bowerman netted but Brian Woodall’s successful conversion left Beevers needing to score and Lewington saved his kick.

GET DEAN SMITH OUT THEN SACK THE BOARD

I’ll be completely honest here, I haven’t been down to the Bescot for a good while but decided to give it a go with my brother tonight……..I have never seen such a complete shambles try and pass themselves off as a football team in all my years as a Saddler. It’s a travesty that the Owner and others responsible for our once great club have let it spiral out of control to currently sit in a position of such mediocrity. We have a squad of players that are at Walsall because nobody else wants them and that is how they play…no heart, no love, no commitment, no desire….no nothing! We sat for 90 mins in the freezing cold before deciding we could take no more and left for the warmth of the pub as extra time played out…..did we miss anything….? No I don’t think so and i’m sure the poor souls who stuck it out would’ve swapped the ignominiy of defeat for a pint and a bag of scratchings any day!

OK – who will be first out of the blocks with Wednesday’s quote – “We’re all trying hard in training, it will come right for us soon, we need to put it right against Chesterfield on Saturday’. I’m going with…Mr Beevers….

Living in Bristol but been to a few games this season, I can honestly say we were awful last night.
I agree with Tony the club is going downhill fast, from the board to the on-line shopping to the players.
Buck your ideas up lads, as I dont fancy watching saddlers at bristol rovers or torquay next season.

Dagenham were the better team on the night and deserved their win. What does that say about the level Walsall are playing at? The game improved immensely once Bowerman came on and it might be worth giving him a start from the off. Macken is a great play maker but we need a midfield to pass the ball to him. Our midfield yesterday were non existent. Hope Manny gets better soon.

I didn’t go last night and thank goodness I didn’t. How can a group of players play as they did against Charlton and then lose at home against the lowest club in the Football League – what a joke. This bunch of players lack skill and class and so you would expect them to make up for it with some heart. It’s no good just doing it now and again, they have to give it their all consistently. It’s not even Christmas and all we have got to look forward to is a relegation battle – great! Good luck to the Daggers – at least it’s a local derby for them to look forward to.

what a Joke
what a disgrace
What a shower of S***
Unable to bet a team that is:
Ranked 92rd
The lowest team in the football league.
The bottom team in the English league
1,800 says it all. 36 years of supporting Walsall man and boy and I have never felt so low as now.
Dean clear your desk and turn off the light on your way out.

For the first time i ages I missed a game out of choice, nothing else to do, just couldn’t be bothered. Good decision!
This club is sinking faster than the Titanic. Make no mistake, this club is non-league bound.
Come on Roy Whalley, lets hear your often repeated quote that we are a club transformed under Bonser. Transformed into what, a bankrupt non-league team? You must all be so proud.
I think Smith must now go but the ONLY thing that matters is the club finds a new owner before it’s too late.
BONSER OUT! You’re crippling this club while you wait for the right offer.

it all right saying dean out but who ever u got in with no funds and board that are not bothered about the club what more can he do

catherine, I agree that any managerwill struggle under the urrent board.
However, the least Smith can do is buy players that are:-
a) half decent (Jarvis & Gankpa have been awful)
b) motivated
He fails on both counts and so, regardless of the board, must go.

I see on the other story that Smith refuses to make excuses for our defeat …. and then promptly lists state of the pitch, the FA Cup being a great leveller, the fact that we hould ‘ve had a penalty.
The only factors to consider Dean are the poor quality players you brought in and the fact you couldn’t motivate them to beat a team that have lost 9 straight league games.
