Walsall sign Middlesbrough’s Andy Halliday as one of three targets

Walsall today swooped for Middlesbrough winger Andy Halliday as the Saddlers sealed a deadline day move.

The 20-year-old is believed to have penned a loan deal until January and is in line to make his debut at Stevenage on Saturday.

Boss Dean Smith moved after the Saddlers slipped into the League One relegation zone following one win in 13 games.

And, ahead of tonight’s 5pm loan deadline, Smith has landed one of his three targets to aid the Saddlers.

He said: “Andy a player I’ve been aware of for some time. He comes highly recommended by a number of people.

“This is an opportunity for him to come in and get games under his belt. He’s a determined lad and a great character who wants to do well here.

“He has the knack of scoring goals from wide positions and can play on the left, right or up front, so he will be a good addition to our squad.”

Halliday has failed to break into Tony Mowbray’s Boro side this term after signing a three-year deal under previous boss Gordon Strachan following a 2010 switch from Livingston.

The former Glasgow Rangers trainee has made just 13 appearances, scoring once, for the Championship side.

Smith confirmed his interest after last night’s 3-2 FA Cup first-round replay win over Exeter which landed them a second-round trip to Dagenham & Redbridge.

He said: “Andrew is one I have been speaking about. I’ve spoken with a number of clubs in terms of signings and I’m hopeful of getting two or three in.

“I still feel we need to strengthen in certain areas and we will do that.”

Strachan had alot of faith in the lad and he scored 14 in his last season at Livingston. Looks tidy, would like Jordan Cook back from Sunderland again too. UTS!

So its now 5.05pm and the loan window is shut and we having signed one player!

So much for Dean Smith saying “I still feel we need to strengthen in certain areas and we will do that” and Express and Star headline one of three targets.

Just hope new young players like Patterson and Bowerman are up for the challange!

    KEEP THE FAITH UTS!
