Walsall goalkeeper David Grof could have signed for West Brom

Walsall goalkeeper David Grof today revealed he almost joined West Brom after the Baggies spotted his Premier League potential.

The Hungarian has lifted the lid on his aborted Hawthorns move – which was scuppered when then-manager Tony Mowbray walked out to join Celtic in 2009.

Grof had a two-week trial at West Brom, while at Hibernian before eventually signing for Notts County in 2010 and then joining the Saddlers in the summer.

He said: “Tony was my manager at Hibs and he was looking to take me to West Brom but, in the end, he ended up leaving and signing for Celtic.

“I was there on trial just before he left and if he’d stayed I probably would have ended up signing for them but I just have to get on with it and prove myself here.”
