Walsall 0 Milton Keynes Dons 2

Walsall boss Dean Smith went to the stands and Lee Beevers played in goal for an hour in a madcap game.

The manager was dismissed by referee David Phillips at half-time, after a controversial 45 minutes which condemned the 10-man Saddlers to defeat against Milton Keynes Dons.

Goalkeeper Jimmy Walker was sent off for handling outside the area on 33 minutes leaving right-back Beevers – recalled for Darryl Westlake – in goal with regular No 2 David Grof left out of the squad.

Dean Lewington scored the resultant free-kick and former Walsall favourite Jabo Ibehre made it 2-0, despite hints of offside, a minute before the break.

Claude Gnakpa hit both posts with the same shot as the valiant Saddlers battled back in the second-half, but defeat leaves them out of the League One drop zone only on goal difference.

Midfielder Mark Wilson was handed an instant debut for the Saddlers, after joining on a month’s loan from Doncaster yesterday with Beevers the only other change.

But the right-back wouldn’t have had an inkling of what was in store after a tepid opening.

Darren Potter’s tame effort flew straight at Walker, while Alex Nicholls screwed one well wide as both sides cancelled each other out.

The Saddlers would have taken solace from matching the Dons – seventh in League One prior to kick off despite one win in nine games – but failed to seriously hurt them.

Captain Andy Butler, on his 50th Walsall appearance, blocked well from Daniel Powell on 29 minutes but the game turned on 32 minutes, after Walker was sent off.

There seemed little danger when he came to claim the ball on the edge of his box but the veteran goalkeeper stepped out of his area – and was immediately sent off.

Beevers went between the sticks but was given no chance with Lewington’s free-kick, which screamed into the top corner.

In the aftermath, Jamie Paterson replaced Jon Macken but the Saddlers had a mountain to climb and, a minute before half-time, Dons doubled their lead with another controversial goal.

Beevers did well to block from Luke Chadwick but the ball bounced to Ibehre – who looked offside – to tap in.

The furious home players surrounded the officials but the goal was given – before Kevan Hurst limped off in first-half stoppage time and was replaced by Gnakpa.

Saddlers boss Smith was dismissed at the break but the controversy inspired the hosts, as Richard Taundry and Nicholls saw shots deflected wide immediately after the re-start.

Beevers claimed Stephen Gleeson’s effort with minimum fuss, before Manny Smith headed over Wilson’s free-kick.

The Saddlers were giving it a go – backed by a loyal support – but were left stunned when Nicholls fed Gnakpa and the substitute’s effort hit both posts, before bouncing out, on the hour.

Walsall were the better side, led by the tricky Paterson, but couldn’t score and Smith failed to get a decent connection on a header.

Beevers, comfortable in goal, claimed efforts from Powell and Gleeson on 78 minutes before taking Angelo Balanta’s shot.

Paterson, by far Walsall’s best outlet, twice fired off target before David Martin denied the livewire – pushing his 25-yard drive wide a minute from time.

A game spoiled by an awful Ref and linesman. Walsall were superb in the second half, clearly spurred on by having the game cheated away from them in the first. They played with an urgency not seen at home this season. They passed the ball quickly, movement was excellent and they only lacked that bit of luck to see the ball in the net. My only real complaint is that it took the controversy of the first half to get them playing how we know they can!

Mentions go to out Patterson who was a constant threat, he just desperately needs a goal to boost his confidence; Wilson who seemed to be what we’ve been missing in midfield; Nicholls a menace with his pace and energy and finally Lee Beevers who was a hero in goal.

“Ibhere looked offside” —– half of the MK dons team were offside when the goal was given!!!!! The writer of this article was is trying to be diplomatic that’s all I can say.

I wish we could play all the time like we did with 10 men in the second half. Walker deserved to be sent off he did handle outside his area and we can’t argue with that no matter what Walker might try to claim. However, it proves what poor managerial decisions have been made this season when you don’t have a sub goalkeeper on the bench.

Well done Beevers – you were the crowds man of the match and Wilson played excellently on his debut for the Saddlers he made such a difference midfield. Keep him!

first of all walker claimed the ball in his arera and the steped over the line should have been a yellow not a red he had collected the ball and did not obstruct play Mk player would not have got to the ball, second goal clearly of side even mks manager made a remark about being offside to his assistant
why was Chris Nicolls not allowed in the dug out area at half time he is an assistant manager and was not sent of at half time but the fourth offical would not allow him in the area a first class game spoiled by officials that could not keep up with play fouls went on without any warnings macken hit in the throat linesman in line with play did nothing
saddlers player fouled mk player booked were is the fair play I have never heard so much booing at the officals they should be made to come and appologise to the walsall fans for their appalling behaviour on the pitch walsall did not deserve to loose the game should have been 1-1 but for the officals
should be removed from the referees list all four load of rubbish

1/ first of all i think jake is a bit clueless if he thinks we can get a better manager than smith. Even the real mourinho couldnt get a decent team on the pursestrings that smith is given.

2/ I agree that we should have had a goaljkeeper on the bench this is a stupid mistake given that we dont really have a big enough squad of quality of players to justify this.

3/ The goal was clearly onside, mark wilson was playing everyone onside has he was walking in slow motion back to hold line.

I do think we played well since we were down to 10 men. I think if we had a sub goalie we would of coneded has he would of positioned himself correctly for the free kick and would have held on to the shot that led to the second goal. I dont know how u can hit both posts in the same shot and not score, all in all we were unlucky not to come away with something.

Having watched the small amount of footage shown on “The Football League Show” many times and in slow motion I now agree Ibehere was pnside but then player who passed the ball back to him was definitely offside when he played the ball back!

What a strange two weeks it has been since our last game. I haven’t looked over my neighbour’s fence with as much interest since Pamela Anderson moved in next door and regularly used her trampoline, writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.
