Walsall 1 Exeter 2
Tuesday 25th October 2011, 10:00PM BST.
Walsall gifted Exeter their first win away win of the season after they slipped to a sloppy defeat at the Banks’s Stadium.
Alex Nicholls’ third goal in four games cancelled out Daniel Nardiello’s early opener, but the former Manchester United trainee cashed in on Jimmy Walker’s error 12 minutes from time to win it.
Will Grigg squandered a golden chance to level in injury time but headed Darryl Westlake’s cross wide.
Kevan Hurst and Jon Macken both hit the post for the Saddlers – who become the first team to ship goals to the Grecians at home this term.
Jon Macken and Richard Taundry returned for the benched Grigg and injured Adam Chambers respectively.
The hosts started brightly and Nicholls found goalkeeper Artur Krysiak’s midriff after seven minutes but 60 seconds later they fell behind.
Nardiello was allowed to cut in from the left and afforded too much time to pick his spot from 18-yards.
It was the first away goal Exeter had scored all season but their celebrations were cut short three minutes later when Nicholls levelled.
The striker latched onto Hurst’s neat header and drilled a low effort past Krysiak from 10-yads.
Two goals in the opening 11 minutes made a mockery of the two club’s goalscoring woes – Exeter and the Saddlers were the worst and joint worst scorers in the division prior to kick off.
David Noble should have fired the Grecians back in front on 17 minutes but blazed over, after Nardiello seized on Hurst’s sloppy pass.
The winger swiftly recovered, though, and almost scored twice within 30 seconds.
First his rasping low drive from 20-yards smacked the inside of Krysiak’s post, before the goalkeeper superbly tipped his curling effort over.
Liam Sercombe stabbed wide to remind the Saddlers of Exeter’s threat, but both sides’ momentum was hit by torrential rain which made the last 15 minutes of the first-half a washout.
The rain abated at the break and it was the visitors who settled quicker – but the Saddlers came within inches of taking the lead just before the hour.
Macken received the ball 18-yards out on the left and fired off stunning effort which rattled the top of the post.
But Walsall still failed to find the killer pass to prise open their visitors.
It left the Grecians in with a chance and they took in on 78 minutes, when Walker failed to keep stop Nardiello’s drive and the ball looped into the net.
The Saddlers’ tempo had disappeared but they should have levelled in injury time, substitute Will Grigg planted a free header wide.

This was a disgraceful defeat against the worst side to visit Bescot this season. If Deano comes out and say’s we were unlucky he’s kidding himself. Squad is no where good enough – we need a rightback, creative midfielder and a forward who looks like he can score goals. Unless some money is released to attract some quality then this team will justify bookies making us one of the teams to get relegated.
This performance was as bad as anything that occurred under Mullen and Hutchins.

What a total shower. The whole lot of them should be made to give a personal apology to every one at the ground and pay for there tickets out of there own pocket…
Deano.. take a good hard look at yourself and ask am I up to the job! because the team you put together are not…

Agreed. 1 win in 10 games is bad enough but to put in yet another sub standard display at home and against the poorest side in the division is unacceptable. What is this problem at home? Granted, the crowds aren’t massive but those of us that are there have nothing to be encouraged by. Sorry to say it but I don’t think we can afford to give it too much longer Deano. If we don’t get a result Saturday and then things don’t improve into November there can only be one outcome.

Now that Sven is out of a job, maybe we could give him a call and he could find us some ‘investors’ like he did for County and Leicester lol

Nothing will change, until the grand and a half a day man will sail into the Cypriot sunset!

Was thinking this was one they should win so – at -7.15 should I go and spend £12.50 to sit in rain lashed stand ? — then – no they cant be bothered so why should I – good decision !!!
Maybe it will be a bit more entertaining in the second division – we will see !

said this for years now. Mr Bonser is presiding over the terminal , painful slow death of our club.

Come on then! We’re waiting to see which player comes on here spouting which excuse. People are having bets about this.
More clever talk from players yesterday who then went on the pitch and forget all the easy words.
Where’s Bangkok Bry to assure us all is really okay?
BONSER OUT!

A bit of realism is needed. Walsall only just stayed up last season and have lost the better players out of that squad. There are good young players coming through but what is needed from all is support and encouragement. Sacking the manager wont work, getting behind the team will! Keep the faith its going to be tough but being a Walsall fan its par for the course!!

Nice one Tinned. :)
Craig… let me put it like this if you have a car that broke down 10 times on 11 trips out would you keep faith with it.. I think not.
So how do you keep faith with a team that has only one win in 11??????

I understand your point Peter but a team needs to be judged in May not right now. Ask yourself what a realistic position for Walsall to finish this season is? There has been no investment in the team just a revolving door policy for players on 12 month deals so it would be hard for any manager to get a consitently succesful side together. In my opinion if Walsall stay in League 1 this season then thats an achievement especially with the quality sides above. This is Dean Smiths 1st job and i believe he is doing well with the resources provided and that is why i believe all Walsall fans should keep faith!

I don’t think you will find too many voices ripping into Deano, it’s the boy’s on the pitch that have the problem One may be two are giving 110% the rest, i think you would be lucky if you where get 50%.
