Dean Smith furious at Saddlers scare
Wednesday 31st August 2011, 8:58AM BST.
Boss Dean Smith today targeted Wembley glory – but revealed his anger as Walsall narrowly escaped a cup shock.
The Saddlers ended their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy hoodoo with a 2-1 first-round win over Shrewsbury last night but Smith admitted they “got out of jail”.
Rockets from Ryan Jarvis, who also missed a second-half penalty, and Richard Taundry ensured Andy Butler’s own goal for the League Two outfit was academic. It was just the second time in six years Walsall have made it past the first round, but Smith demanded better from his men.
“I’m here with a win and happy but slightly angry because our performance was nowhere near the level it should be,” he said. “We had chances to put it to bed and didn’t take them but we’re through to the next round.
“On the ball we were poor. I told them at half-time we’d got out of jail with two wonder goals – a great strike from Jarvis and a great strike from Taundry.”
