Ryan Jarvis vows to kick on at Walsall
Tuesday 30th August 2011, 10:30AM BST.
Walsall striker Ryan Jarvis today declared ‘I am just getting started’ but admitted he must perform to silence his critics.
The hotshot wants to be judged at the end of the season after bagging his first Saddlers goals on his full league debut in Saturday’s 2-0 win at Bournemouth.
Jarvis is now eyeing tonight’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy first round clash with Shrewsbury and insisted his match-winning brace is just the beginning.
He said: “It’s just one game and I can’t rest on it. I need to kick on again whether it’s tonight or Saturday. I need to keep performing and keep scoring and only at the end of the season can I say how I’ve done.
“Then my critics can look at that and judge me. Until then it’s just one game and I need to prepare for the next one. It’s still a great feeling, it’s the first game I’ve started in the league and I’ve got two goals so I’m buzzing.
“But there’s still a long way to go, so I’m not going to get head over heels about it.”
Jarvis will start again tonight, with Will Grigg on international duty with the Northern Ireland under-21 team and Jon Macken a doubt with an ankle injury.
And the 25-year-old admitted he faces a battle for his place when the duo return.
He said: “They are a great partnership and as soon as I arrived I saw they were good players. I knew a lot about Jon and Will is a great young talent.
“It was tough to get in the line up but these things happen and you have to step in and take your chance.”
