Will Grigg makes Saddlers his top priority
Friday 26th August 2011, 12:58PM BST.
Will Grigg today dismissed talk of a senior Northern Ireland call up and insisted he’s focused on Walsall.
The hitman has been touted by boss Dean Smith and strike partner Jon Macken as a potential international star after a whirlwind year.
He has become the Saddlers’ first-choice striker in partnership with Macken less than a year after making his full debut.
Grigg, 20, is set to link up with the Northern Ireland Under-21s again for their European qualifying matches against Serbia and Denmark next week but insisted a senior spot isn’t on his mind.
“It’s great to be part of international football,” he said, ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Bournemouth. “I can go there and learn different coaching methods and also experience different styles of play.
“It’s a constant learning curve for me and if I keep working hard and doing well, you never know, I could get a full cap in the future.
“For the time being, I just want to concentrate on developing my game and doing the best I can in each game that I play in.”
Grigg has scored once this season with the Saddlers claiming five points from their first four League One games but insisted the team deserved more points.
“We got ourselves into a good position at Sheffield United but were undone by a 15-minute spell. Then last weekend against Yeovil we were disappointed to only get a point, so hopefully we can bring home three points from Bournemouth.
“It’s been a case of making sure that we are refreshed and ready this week. We rested up in the early part of the week before really focussing on tomorrow over the past few days.”
Meanwhile, 18-year-old striker Joey Butlin has joined Blue Square North side Solihull Moors on a month’s loan.
Butlin added: “My main target is to try to score in every game and hopefully be rewarded with a first-team spot at Walsall.”
