Walsall boss defends Adam Chambers
Wednesday 10th August 2011, 8:10AM BST.
Frustrated Walsall manager Dean Smith today called for refereeing consistency and insisted Adam Chambers’ red card cost the Saddlers their Carling Cup shot.
Smith’s men went down 3-0 at home to Middlesbrough last night, after midfielder Chambers was sent off just 12 minutes into the game.
Referee Darren Deadman dished out his fourth red card in three games this season when Chambers dived in on Richard Smallwood.
Deadman also awarded Boro a second-half penalty, when Kevan Hurst looked to have won the ball in a challenge on Smallwood.
Marvin Emnes’ hat-trick sunk the Saddlers in the first round clash but Smith defended Chambers and wants more consistency from officials.
The Saddlers boss said: “The hard thing for me is Adam is an honest lad. He went in with two feet but goes in low with no intent to hurt the lad and gets the ball.
“I saw the first tackle on Saturday on Claude Gnakpa from behind and it went unpunished. That was a leg breaker and possibly a bad injury.
“Adam’s was no intent and no injury so do I feel it’s harsh? Yes, I felt it was a yellow card and that’s it.
“I can understand why he’s sent Adam off, because he’s gone in with two feet, but there was no intent to hurt the player and he’s got the ball.
“For me, it’s harsh.”
The Saddlers are deciding whether to appeal, with summer signing Chambers facing a three-match ban.

Come on Dean. What would be the point in appealing and incurring an extra game ban? Surely the message to your players who are getting paid to play is not to challenge two footed. It’s not a new change to the rules after all. When we were playing tackling used to be part of the skills of the game, now it’s not, mainly because of the over reaction and simulation by the players themselves. They can’t have it both ways.
On the plus side, a good reaction from the rest of the team to the set back. The only reason I’m not happy is the bragging rights my ‘boro’ supporting father in law now has.

“Two-footed tackle” – say no more! Shame, as we will really miss Chambers.

Intent is irrelevant Deano. A two footed challenge gets to ejected, regardless – even if you get the ball. Chambers is experienced enough to know better, and so are you!
Still believing. UTS!

I was one of the many Boro fans watching from that part of the ground and thought it was a nailed on red card there was no need to go in two footed . Shame cause after that it was all one way traffic Boro having 65% of the ball.

2 footed tackle with studs showing – automatic sending off! If the b oots had been on the other feet ( so to speak) we would have been demanding a sending off. Don’t bother appealing – waste of time and money. However, Deano you need to pull the team together and get them to watch their behaviour. I know we need to play with passion but we also need to keep players on the field. We’ve had far too many yellow cards in the last 2 games. On another point though the ref was awful – I’d appeal against him!!!!!!!!

Again the second game spoiled by some bad refereeing Darren Deadman was not up with play most of the time chaberlins foul letter of law is a red card but other fouls against walsall went unpunished if we had to score the ref out of 10 it would be 1 for turning up every body is stating the refereeing is awful so what is the league doing about it ????? lets if we can put that behind us and go out and show what we can do on the football pitch on saturday remember deano this is your side you can not blame another manager or put blame on players on your head be it I am looking for a top 6 finish this season
