Walsall bring in striker Ryan Jarvis

Walsall today boosted their attacking options with signing of Ryan Jarvis after his release from League One rivals Leyton Orient.

The 24-year-old was let go after three years at the club during which he made 84 appearances, spending time under current Walsall manager and former Orient assistant boss Dean Smith at Brisbane Road.

But the striker struggled to make an impact last season and was loaned to League Two club Northampton.

Jarvis began his career at Norwich where he became the club’s youngster-ever first team player, featuring in a goalless draw against Walsall in April 2003, aged 16 years and 282 days.

Loan spells at Colchester United, Orient, Kilmarnock and Notts County followed before a permanent switch to Orient in the summer of 2008.

And Smith is determined to help Jarvis realize the potential he showed while a youngster.

The Saddlers boss said: “Ryan is a player that I know a lot about having worked with him at Leyton Orient.

“He’s a great talent who I feel is yet to fulfil his outstanding ability.

“I know that he has the right credentials, he’s got a good attitude and has technical ability.”

Looks a big, strong lad. Let’s hope Deano has found a gem he can polish and score the goals we need to have a good season. 3 players signed so far – all around 25 with some good experience. Let’s hope the new squad can gel and get off to a good start.

never been prolific, and at 6ft tall he’s hardly a giant target man, but in Deano we trust, he obviously knows a bit about him.

Can’t help but notice the lack of detail on just how many goals he has scored and in how many games.

But good luck to him & lets hope he does a good job for us.

Agree with Saddlertd; Potentially good signings BUT my concern is that there’s a common thread in that they’ve all under-achieved so far in their careers and are not proven at League 1 level. This probably explains the 1-year deals too. If they’re no good they get cut loose but if they do reach their potential….they cut themselves loose.

Either way, let’s hope Deano’s got a magic-coaching sponge to get them to reach their potential . UTS

just had a look on wiki and his strike rate is quite poor to say the least, in all games (unsure on number of subs) he has played 194 and scored 24, shouldnt walsall be looking for better?, but maybe deano knows something we dont.

These new signings have all got a point to prove. Coming to the Saddlers is surely going to make or break for their football carriers. I just hope that they make Walsall the success that us fans have been demanding and deserving.

An Orient fan said on a website “…we should be able to replace with him like for like, so expect a chocolate teapot to be signed soon ….”.

Hopefully Deano can draw out of him something that has been lacking so far.

First game of the new season, Leyton Orient at home: ideal chance to ram those words of the Orient fan down his throat with a goal!

Whilst his strike rate isn’t great, you’d expect some realisation that this is his last chance salloon as a Football league player.

I know there is no comparisment but ruben reid wasnt prolific but he was a goo standard and at 6ft and looks strong he could hold it up and who knows what deano has up his sleeve an we dont want to be shouting who we are signing just in case any other clubs are after him and a prolific signing could be on his way and 3 signings so far and not into july yet what more do people want as deano is showing he is in the market to signing players an we need to have faith, and see what happens from the form deano turned us into let have faith and get behind deano UTS!!!
