Kevan Hurst wants a licence to thrill
Wednesday 29th June 2011, 9:29AM BST.
New-boy Kevan Hurst insists will have a licence to thrill at Walsall after vowing to be the Saddlers’ creator-in-chief.
The 25-year-old wants to be let off the leash after coming to the Banks’s Stadium on a one-year deal.
Hurst joined yesterday after being released by Carlisle at the end of last season and will meet his new team-mates when they return for pre-season training tomorrow.
And the versatile midfielder, who can play anywhere across the middle, insisted he can supply the ammunition for his new strike-force.
He said: “I prefer playing on the wing. I enjoy nothing more than getting at players and creating chances. My main attribute is crossing, but I’d like to think that I can start contributing some goals as well.
“I’ve played at Banks’s Stadium a few times over the years and the size of the pitch here will suit my game.
“I’ve had a lot of good battles against Walsall and hopefully I can help the club improve and push on.”
Hurst’s arrival is likely to end Julian Gray’s Saddlers career after the left-winger failed to agree fresh terms.
Last season’s 10-goal top scorer missed the deadline to agree a new contract earlier this month and manager Dean Smith has insisted he will move on without him.

Well done Deano, could be a decent signing, and for not standing for any of Gray’s delaying nonsense like Hutchings did last season: if you only sign a new contract (like Gray did last season) when you find out nobody else wants you then that speaks volumes for your loyalty to a club that showed faith in you. Bye, bye Julian, I hope the grass really is greener in Seatle…..or Bury, wherever you end up.

Welcome Kevan. Good luck.
Bye bye Julian. If you end up without a club, or on a lower contract than we offered I hope you rue your yearly habit of haking yourself around the footballing world looking for a better deal. This time it will have backfired, mainly because we haven’t got the weak willed Hutchings extending the deadline continually.

I hope Dean is not having to buy too cheaply just to field a team – The latest “striker” signed Ryan Jarvis has scored 24 goals in 177 senior games since 2003. Julian Gray has scored 10 in one season and is not a striker !
You knockers should remember that that it is up to anyone in any profession to get the best deal. Do you honestly think players who have proved themselves already want to come to a small club on the edge of the black country for small wages and low gates – get real !!
You should also remember when supporting deadlines and rules that most Walsall fans are only too keen to commit criminal offences -not just break deadlines – when continually asked by the club not to invade the pitch. Yet when players look after their own interests by seeking the best deals they can be vilified.
Bring back Julian and Matt if they will come ! – they were great for us last season
