Tom Williams has warned Walsall not to chuck away their chance of survival.

The Saddlers suffered late heartbreak when Jason Lowe’s 88th minute equaliser denied them a priceless win after a 1-1 draw at Oldham yesterday.

A point moved them out of the League One drop zone after Bristol Rovers and Dagenham & Redbridge lost at Bournemouth and Huddersfield respectively.

But left-back Williams, whose free-kick gave the Saddlers the lead yesterday, insisted fifth-bottom Walsall cannot bank on all of their rivals losing their final two games.

He said: “I walked off the pitch expecting to be in the bottom four. We can’t just rely on other sides slipping up.

“Teams are looking for us to slip up so most of it is in our own hands – I know Plymouth have got a game in hand though.

“There isn’t any margin for error. If we win on Saturday against Charlton we could be almost safe or we might need to go to Southampton to win. There are so many different things happening.

“There are two games to go, it’s a mini league and whoever gets more points stays up. We’ve given ourselves a great chance.

“We’ve got a home game against Charlton and then a massive game on the last day of the season.”

But, despite their Boundary Park disappointment, Williams insists the Saddlers have worked wonders to edge ahead.

He said: “Some of the guys were saying two or three months ago we wouldn’t have been able to say that.

“We looked dead and buried but we’re a team who can create chances – we’ve got a bit of grit and bite about us.

“Every game we’ve had to graft to get anything – it’s been like that since I’ve been here. We’re a battling side but it’s two games, we’re just outside, and Plymouth have got a game in hand.

“We’re going to dig in and the lads are up for it. They are disappointed but we’re looking forward to Saturday.”

Williams netted his first Walsall goal when his 58th minute free-kick sailed in, but admitted he would have swapped it for the win.

He said: “I would have preferred if it had given us three points – it’s taken the edge off it.”
