Darren Byfield sets seven-point safety target
Friday 22nd April 2011, 11:27AM BST.
Darren Byfield today set Walsall a seven-point survival target and admitted it’s win or bust over Easter.
The striker reckons 50 points will see the Saddlers safe as they battle the League One drop.
They host Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow before Monday’s trip to Oldham in the crucial Easter weekend which could define their fate.
And, with Walsall a point from the safety line before today’s results, Byfield insisted seven points from their last four games should seal safety.
He said: “If we can get two wins and a draw we’re staying up. Seven points would take us to 50 points which will probably be enough.
“Notts County won at Tranmere on Tuesday and we could have done with them losing but we have to keep going.
“This weekend is massive, it’s huge. We’ll know a lot more about what’s going to happen come Monday evening.
“It could be settled this weekend. I know there are two games after that but if we can pick up points in the next two games we could be safe by the time we play Charlton next weekend.”
The fourth-bottom Saddlers welcome Charlton next Saturday before going to Southampton on the final day of the season.
But Byfield admitted a win in the next two games is vital if they want to avoid last-day drama.
“We need a win out of the two games that’s a fact – if we don’t get one then we’ll start getting worried,” said the 34-year-old.
“We’ve got to take maximum points from our home games. We have to because anything away at Oldham and Southampton is a bonus.
“We don’t want it to go down to the last day. We need to do it now, get a home win tomorrow and get something at Oldham.
“We can go and win there because they are not playing for anything and then go and beat Charlton.
“Four points over the weekend would be great. I know it’s important we win at home so if we don’t win against Wednesday we have to beat Oldham.”
And the striker admitted, with Swindon and Plymouth looking doomed, it’s a four horse race for survival.
He said: “It’s from us, Notts County, Dagenham and Bristol Rovers. Tranmere only need one win to be safe. It’s mad and it’s weird but we can’t keep looking at others, we’ll just keep doing what we’re doing.”
