Tom Williams set for final day fight
Tuesday 29th March 2011, 9:59AM BST.
Tom Williams has predicted Walsall’s drop fight could go to a final day shoot out.
The Saddlers are a point from safety ahead of the survival run-in and Williams reckons they face a white knuckle ride to the finish line.
Ten points separate the bottom seven after Tranmere’s goalless draw at Oldham last night.
The Saddlers have seven games to beat the League One drop and Williams admitted they could face D-Day at Southampton on May 7.
He said: “The relegation race is wide open. It’s so tight and big teams are looking over their shoulders thinking ‘we could get dragged into it.’
“With it being so tight the last spot may go down to the last day of the season. The bottom two or three may be decided before then but the last spot could go to the wire. If you pick up a few results you have got a chance.
“You can win every game and that’s how we’ve got to look at it.”
Dagenham & Redbridge, Swindon and Yeovil all play tonight in games which could hit the Saddlers’ survival hopes with the team sidelined until they go to Plymouth on April 9.
They sit out this weekend as original opponents Brentford are in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final with Carlisle on Sunday.
But Williams insisted the Saddlers are powerless to control others and will try to ignore the results.
He said: “We need to keep performing. From now all the teams are going to win, lose and draw. All we can do is focus on ourselves, keep performing, putting the effort in training, recover right and prepare for every game.
“It’s the best way we can get maximum points from the games because at the minute it’s so tight. Everyone is going to play each.
“Now, right up until the end of the season, there won’t be many games which aren’t important.”
