Boss urges Walsall to go for the kill
Friday 25th March 2011, 10:00AM GMT.
Walsall manager Dean Smith has vowed to go for the kill at Milton Keynes Dons as the Saddlers aim to dodge another relegation bullet.
The fourth-bottom Saddlers travel to Stadium MK tonight, bidding to escape the League One drop zone knowing a win would lift them above Dagenham & Redbridge and Yeovil.
Since taking control in January, Smith has adopted an attacking philosophy and, despite going to play-off hopefuls Dons as underdogs, refuses to ditch his beliefs.
He said: “You send out a team to win. If I sent a team out to go and get a point the mindset wouldn’t be right, players need to know they are going out to win every game and that’s how I set them up.
“We’ll be going there to win the game. I’m not bothered about the other teams, I’m just concentrating on us and we’ll set the team up to win the game.”
Smith is hoping to make it a personal Dons double this term, having already led the youth team to a 1-0 FA Youth Cup victory at Stadium MK last October.
He said: “MK Dons are a good team, they’ve been on a decent run and it’s a tough place to go, but I’ve already gone there this season and won so hopefully I can make it a win double.
“I’m not sure I’ve got the secret, it’s a good place to go, it’s a lovely stadium with a big pitch, they will play football and so will we.
“Walsall have got a decent record there, I remember going there on a scouting mission and seeing them beat the Dons 1-0 with Jabo Ibehre scoring a couple of seasons ago.”
