Matt Gill is recalled from Walsall
Friday 18th February 2011, 10:55AM GMT.
Walsall’s survival hopes were hit today after Norwich confirmed they will recall Matt Gill.
The midfielder’s loan was due to expire after tomorrow’s trip to Colchester and, despite the Saddlers trying to extend it, the Canaries want him back.
Gill has scored twice in seven games for the Saddlers and starred in their revival under manager Dean Smith, which has taken them to the brink of the safety line.
Norwich boss Paul Lambert said: “He is not staying. Because he has had the games now, he should be fit.
“Matt has done really well at Walsall but I am bringing him back. He needed games.”
Yesterday, Smith revealed he wanted to keep the 30-year-old for longer and the clubs did hold talks.
But the Saddlers’ attempts have been rebuffed leaving a massive hole in their midfield.
Whether Gill plays for the promotion-chasing Canaries remains to be seen, as he has made just 16 appearances since a 2009 move from Exeter.
But he will make a farewell outing at Colchester tomorrow with third-bottom Walsall bidding to climb out of the League One drop zone for the first time in four months.
A win – coupled with Swindon failing to beat Carlisle – would see them edge ahead of Plymouth and Yeovil on goal difference as the West County duo aren’t playing.
It would cap a stunning turnaround after Smith inherited a team eight points from safety just last month.
And Gill reckons, with just 10 points covering the bottom 10 of League One, the race for safety is on – even if he is unable to play a part.
He said: “I would think there are seven or eight teams who are worried – there are plenty involved which is good for us. It’s quite tough to know what will be needed to stay up.
“You’re looking at Exeter on 38 points in 14th and they might be a bit too far away but everyone beneath them will have a slight eye on what’s going on behind them.
“Yeovil looked like they were out of it but now have been sucked back down and there are probably six, seven or eight teams who have got it all on their minds.
“We’re probably the only club with the momentum at the moment.”

Big loss but we have an able replacement in Taundry and experienced back up in Tom Williams. Gill has been excellent and his level of quality has shown. Perhaps Deano will look to bring someone else in on loan??

Oh no! To say Taundry is an able replacement is laughable, is it any coincidence that one of the first things Deano did was to bring in an experienced midfielder after Hutchings never did.
Our midfield is light and immediate ‘experienced’ replacements are required

Taundry, OMG. A big loss, I hope Smith can find an equally good replacement

Very unlikely Gill will play for Norwich. Lambert has just got the hump after we had a go at him for driving last seasons postponement at the Bonks’ stadium at the last minute

A shame that he will go back to Norwich but probably not play for them.
MATT = I kind of have to agree that Taundry is an ‘decent’ replacement, we missed his fight in midfield, If only to get him off the wing where he played quite poorly on Tuesday night.
I am concerned that Taundry and Richards struggle in midfield together but we have a re-vitalised team under Deano Smith so anything is possible, even the Great Escape from Bonser-traz.

Very very bad news. I agree with Exiled, Gill is unlikely to have any influence on their season whereas he could have had a massive one on ours. I am also sure Lambert is having a sly snigger after the incident Exiled refers to.
We desperately need someone to replace him. Not only has Gill been quality, he has allowed Richards to play better. Reverting back to the central midfield that was one of the main reasons we have been so poor most of the season has the potential to be a disaster

A huge blow.

A big loss – I wonder if Matt Gill will get anywhere near the Norwich 1st team squad or is this Lambert getting pay back for the stick we gave him over last season’s postponement? We need to replace him quickly…and if he fancies a permanent move to the Midlands at the end of the season then we would be delighted to have him to spearhead next season’s League 1 promotion campaign!! C’mon you Reds.

Massive loss, he is twice the player of Taundry in the middle.
This is clearly Lambert with an agenda, he wasnt, and still wont be anywhere near the Norwich squad.
With all the shenanigans of him using his big head to get the game called off last season i cant say im all that suprised.
We need to replace Gill for the next game.
