Walsall fight on vows Darryl Westlake

Walsall defender Darryl Westlake has vowed the Saddlers will fight to the end to beat the drop after netting his first senior goal.
The right-back’s second-half stunner earned the team a 1-1 draw with Oldham last night but they remain rooted to the bottom of League One.
However, the point ensured they didn’t lose any ground on their relegation rivals and stayed nine points adrift of safety.
It was the first draw at the Banks’s Stadium this term and Westlake insisted the Saddlers will not surrender their League One status lightly.
He said: “We’re not going to give up until the end. We need to get the wins to get out of the relegation zone.
“In the last few games we’ve been playing better. Against Huddersfield we were the better team but mistakes cost us.
“The supporters are backing us now we’re playing better and home is where we need to get the wins.”
The 19-year-old cancelled out Filipe Morais’ opener to record his first goal for the club on his 44th appearance.
Both Westlake and left-back Aaron Lescott have scored under new manager Dean Smith and Westlake is reaping the rewards of Smith’s positive play.
The teenager said: “It was my first goal of career, I was pleased and it was about time one of them went in.
“We’ve been working on getting forward in training and it’s coming out on the pitch.
“There’s a more positive attitude to the club, we’re playing well under Dean and we feel we can get out of the relegation zone.
“It was just hit and hope and it went in, it was great for it to be in front of all the fans. My last goal was about three years ago for the youth team, so it was a great moment.
“We should have won the game and should have put it to bed though, we were all over them and the better team.”
