Matt Gill up for Walsall’s fight

Matt Gill has insisted he had no hesitation in swapping a promotion race for a relegation fight after joining Walsall.

The Norwich loanee made his debut in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Exeter after signing for a month from the Premier League chasing Canaries.

Gill has found his chances at Carrow Road limited and has made just six appearances under Paul Lambert, who has taken Norwich to third in the Championship.

But, despite the Saddlers’ plight at the bottom of League One, the 30-year-old wasn’t about to hang around on the bench in Norfolk.

He said: “I didn’t need convincing at all, it’s a good opportunity to come and play and help the lads out.

“I am out of contract in the summer, who knows but I would be very surprised if I was offered anything at Norwich, so we’ll have to wait and see.

“I am playing for my future, I am 30-years-old, so I need to play as many games as I can and do as well as I can.

“Usually it looks after itself but sitting in Norwich’s reserves wasn’t going to help me so I needed to get out and play.

“The lads at Norwich are doing unbelievably well and the manager has been a different class. He’s been excellent with me and gave me an opportunity to go to Peterborough earlier in the season.

“With the strength and depth in the squad he felt it was better for me to go and get some games.

“I let him make the decision for me.”

Gill impressed on Saturday and is likely to make his home debut against Oldham tomorrow and insisted he is up for the fight.

He said: “I want to be as much help to the gaffer as I possibly can.

“Dean Smith just wants me to be bubbly and as positive as I can, it’s important everyone keeps positive.”
