Manager set for Jimmy Walker talks
Friday 21st January 2011, 12:29PM GMT.
New Walsall manager Dean Smith was today set for talks with Jimmy Walker as the Saddlers bid to resolve the goalkeeper’s future.
The veteran’s short-term deal expires at the end of the month and Smith, who was appointed boss today, will sit down with the 37-year-old within the week.
Walker is expected to return at Exeter tomorrow after over a month out with a hamstring injury and will then talk to Smith.
Smith said: “Jimmy will sit down with me and we’ll discuss where we go. ‘Wacka’ is a great person to have about the place, he knows the place and has been here a long time.
“He’s experienced and gives a calmness and positivity around the dressing room, so I’ll sit down with him and see where we go next week.
“He’s a crowd favourite and everyone at this club knows what James Walker can do.
“A fit James Walker is a massive bonus for the football club and we need a fit James Walker. “
But Smith remained tight-lipped over his hopes of extending the former West Ham and Tottenham goalkeeper’s deal.
The manager said: “Until I’ve spoken to him and got feedback off James himself I’ll keep my cards close to my chest.”
David Bevan has deputised for Walker in the last three games while Jonny Brain – who started the season as first-choice – has fallen out of favour.
Rumours Brain has quit the club are wide of the mark. He was training this morning and Smith insisted he is still part of the squad.
He added: “Jonny is a part of our plans at the moment. He’s not asked to leave at all.”
