Steve Jones’ battle cry at Walsall

Steve Jones has issued a battle cry ahead of Walsall’s festive fight and urged the Saddlers to kick on.

The winger wants an unbeaten run in their three crunch clashes against relegation rivals.

The home game with Southampton on Saturday was a victim of the big freeze and the postponement leaves them five points from the League One safety line.

They go to drop rivals Bristol Rovers on Boxing Day, weather permitting, before hosting fellow strugglers Dagenham and Redbridge and Notts County.

And Jones knows an unbeaten Christmas is crucial to the second-bottom Saddlers’ survival hopes.

He said: “We want to be unbeaten and win all three games. After three wins, if we don’t have any confidence, I don’t know what we’ll do. But the lads seem confident now.

“Christmas always important, if you’re going for promotion you need to kick on over the period. There’s that many games you need to take maximum points to go on until the end of the season.

“It’s the same at the bottom. We need to take every point we can and take that into the new year.”

Saturday’s postponement halted Walsall’s momentum after two wins in the last three league games lifted them off the bottom.

Jones knows, with 27 games still to play, the team have time on their side to escape the drop.

He said: “The one good thing about it is we’ve got time.

“That’s the most important factor.”
