Andy Butler is backing his manager
Thursday 25th November 2010, 10:55AM GMT.
Walsall defender Andy Butler has insisted sacking Chris Hutchings would be pointless and labelled the under-fire manager as the best man for the job.
The centre-back added his name to the growing list of players who have publically backed the boss, with the club seven points from safety at the bottom of League One.
The Saddlers go to Torquay in the FA Cup second round on Saturday and Butler believes any change of manager would only unsettle the players.
He said: “I don’t think a change would do any good because the lads are all 100 per cent behind the manager.
“I don’t know what other manager could come in and do differently anyway. I’ve had managers who rant and rave and you don’t need that when you’re down there.
“You need someone with a calm head, who’s been there and done it before and this gaffer is the man to do it.”
The Saddlers’ 3-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday saw them fail to build on back-to-back wins last week.
But Butler admitted the players still need to take more responsibility for a season which has seen them win just five times.
He said: “As players we should be under pressure, he’s brought us in to do a job.
“He hasn’t bought bad players in but we need to take responsibility now. He has backed us 100 per cent and is always telling us how much faith he has in us.
“The fans have to realise the players are working hard but are not getting the rub of the green.”
A decent display at Wednesday yielded no reward but, ahead of Saturday’s trip to Plainmoor, Butler believes the cup could be the Saddlers’ saviour.
He said: “It’s a winnable game, Torquay are doing well in League Two but we have to show what we can do.
“It’ll be nice to get on a winning run. Winning breeds confidence and confidence gets results.
“Winning brings so much confidence to players, when you’re down there things don’t go for you but, when you get a result, it’s like a snowball effect.
“Everyone starts jumping around in training and buzzing.”

New boy, just given a few games after being left in the cold by last club backs manager that gives him this chance. Not exactly the most shocking headline is it?
According to Butler we need a manager that has been there and done it before. Well Hutchings most certainly has managed clubs that have strangely been involved in many defeats and relegation scraps. If you want a manager that will get you in a relegation scrap then Hutchings is your man.
I wonder if it was just all down to bad luck in those jobs as well?

If we beat Torquay and draw a trip to Manchester Utd or City, Arsenal, Liverpool or any of the glamour Premiership clubs there will be such a rush for tickets it will be embarrasing to see those `supporters` who watch our games from the screen or the paper scrabbling around to be part of the club again queing for tickets.

Why the inverted commas Daventry. People are free to support the club in whatever way they choose.
I have a season ticket and still go away but I know people who I’ve travelled the length of the country with, people who’d go to Gillingham or Plymouth or Hartlepool on a Tuesday night, who are so sick of the way the club is run they can’t face it anymore.
These supporters shouldn’t be condemned, they deserve any big occasion as much as anyone … or are you suggesting you’d like us to take 150 fans to Old Trafford or the Emirates?

How stupid do the club think the supporters are by sending out a different player each week to regurgitate this nonsense? The supporters are quite capable of making their own minds up as they are the ones watching this dross week in week out. Even when we played better against Wednesday the other night we never really had the feeling that we would score. We are incapable of creating anything. Hutchings has got to go, he is clueless. We need someone who can organise and motivate the players, if there is no change in the very near future we are doomed
