Chris Hutchings confident of backing
Friday 29th October 2010, 10:00AM BST.
Under-fire Walsall manager Chris Hutchings has insisted he still has the backing of the Walsall board – despite a lack of public support from Saddlers chiefs.
The Banks’s Stadium hierarchy have remained silent during a turbulent week after last weekend’s 4-1 defeat to relegation rivals Tranmere.
The club are joint-bottom of League One and go to play-off hopefuls Huddersfield tomorrow – who have lost just once at home all season.
But Hutchings feels “reassured” with the board’s stance because he has been given cash to turn the season around.
He said: “The chairman has given me backing to get players in and that says a lot about it.
“If I didn’t have that backing we’d be looking at going in with the same players who haven’t necessarily got us in the position but who needed a bit of help.
“To have that is reassuring but at the same time it’s a results business and we’re working tirelessly to bring players in.”
The manager again questioned his players ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Huddersfield – where they have never won.
Hutchings has already doubted if some of them had the stomach for a relegation scrap this week.
He added: “Some may have let themselves down. Everyone has to question themselves.
“I do, my assistant Martin O’Connor does and the players have to do the same. The players have to look at themselves and ask ‘am I performing?’
“If they’re not we’ll be looking to bring other players in who will give them a lift, who will go that extra mile to make sure we get good results.
“We do the training, we do what’s right and let them know formations and sometimes they have to take it upon themselves to perform.
“If you’re inconsistent that’s not good enough and that’s why we are where we are.”
