'Miracle workers' get Cradley Heathens going

Cradley Heathens bosses have labelled Monmore Green track staff 'miracle workers' after their season opener went ahead as planned on Monday.

Heathens are back at Wolverhampton for home meetings after a season at Birmingham and got the new season off to a winning start over Belle Vue.

But the fact the meeting went ahead, at all, was a remarkable achievement after a combination of storms, rain, sleet – and even snow!

Club director Nigel Pearson said: "The track was flooded on Monday morning and the easiest thing to do would have been to call it off there and then.

"But we studied the forecast and decided to give it a go. Chris Van Straaten has the best in the business working on his Wolverhampton track in Doc Bridgett and his team – and so it proved once again."

Heathens are back at Monmore on Monday April 11 against Rye House. Meanwhile, maximum man Max Clegg has praised Cradley after their season opening victory against Belle Vue on Monday.

The 18-year-old inspired the Motor Market Heathens to a 51-39 win over the Colts in front of a bumper crowd at Monmore Green.

Clegg commented: "First one of the year, everyone's always a little bit nervous, but we picked up the win so I'm really pleased. I'm really proud of the team."
