Ridiculous fancy dress costumes, an over consumption of beer and some incredibly cheesy nicknames.

It can only mean one thing – the Grand Slam of Darts is back in Wolverhampton.

Having started at the weekend, the Civic Hall is becoming packed to capacity every night as arrow lovers descend on one of the most anticipated events on the Wolverhampton calendar.

Fancy dress plays a huge role in any night at the darts, and already the venue has seen everything from pirates and parrots to a hen and her eggs.

This is on top of the always popular wigs, face masks and novelty sunglasses.

Drinking is at a premium and beer tends to be sold in pitchers as opposed to the more traditional pint.

Jack Palin, Tez Rowley, Garry Harris, Jim Rolinson and Robert Burns, who are all from Wolverhampton, were at the darts together on Saturday describing it as 'a great night out'.

Jack said: "I don't follow darts but I'm enjoying the atmosphere"

While the others added: "It's a good night out, the diverse range of people Wolverhampton attracts makes it a lot of fun. It's superb, what else do you want?"

Another darts goer, Mick Simister who lives in Kidderminister, said the Civic Halls was the best PDC venue on tour 'by a mile'.

He added: "The atmosphere in these smaller venues are fantastic, the bigger venues are too much."

On the oche the Grand Slam, the only competition to host both PDC and BDO players, has already produced some great encounters.

Scottish power-hitter Gary Anderson pulled off a 5-3 victory against five-time world champion Raymond 'Barney' van Barneveld yesterday while Andy Fordham, back in the game after suffering a stroke, was edged out 5-2 by former world champion Adrian Lewis.
