It's his last chance to turn his year around when he takes his place at the Alexandra Palace in London, with the event starting on December 18,

writes Craig Birch.

The schedule of play will be released later this week after yesterday's draw was made on Sky Sports, who are launching a new darts channel to televise the 17-day long tournament.

Former semi-finalist Jones is unseeded for the first time after slipping to 37th in the Order of Merit, after picking up just £13,500 on the Pro Tour this year.

The £8,000 he will pick up just for playing in the competition will be needed to pay the bills, with another £4,000 and then £6,000 guaranteed if the can reach the third round.

The father-of-three, 49, will use the prize money to help pay the mortgage on his home in Wednesfield, but the more will be merrier if he wants to continue darting full-time.

He said: "This is the closest I have ever come, the last job I had outside of playing was in insurance years ago and I might have to go back to it.

"It's now or never for me, really, to see that doesn't happen. I am practicing for three hours a day and, if that doesn't change anything, I don't know what else to do.

"It's the worst year I have had on the tour and most of it has been down to me messing around and not finishing games off, when I've had the chance.

"I am, by no means, the worst player out there, but the standard is getting better and better all of the time. If you make a mistake, you get punished."

'The Wanderer' get his chance to turn the tide against 26th seed Winstanley, a former world championship finalist in the BDO.

He will land either world No 7 Simon Whitlock or Darren Webster if he progresses, with Jones admitting there are scores to be settled.

He said: "If ever there was a time to find a bit of form, this is it. It's a 50-50 game against Winstanley, I am not disappointed with the draw.

"I am sick of death of losing to Simon Whitlock, he's found a way to beat me every time and I owe him one. It would be a dream come true!"
