Should 'the Wanderer' overcome Kevin McDine tomorrow afternoon, world No 2 and last year's runner-up Michael van Gerwen is likely to lie in wait.

Van Gerwen first has to beat either Ben Ward or Zoran Lerchbacher from the qualifying round on Tuesday night to meet the first round winner of Jones-McDine.

And Jones has form against 'Mighty Mike,' beating him 6-5 in September's German Darts Masters and pushing him to the last leg over a 6-5 defeat during May's European Open.

But the Wednesfield darter first has to see off the talented but erratic McDine, who he hasn't played in two-and-a-half years, live on Sky Sports at the Alexandra Palace in London.

Jones said: "It's hard to predict and it doesn't matter how much I prepare and practice, it's all on the day. I think Kevin is a great player but I am the favourite.

"For me, the pressure is off if I can beat him and get the first game out of the way, because no one is expecting me to beat Michael van Gerwen.

"I would take any sort of result against Kevin as long as I play well, because I would need that momentum going into the second game.

"I would be happy with beating Kevin, but a win over van Gerwen would put me right back on the map. It would make me the star of the week.

"I am not scared, at all, I want to play him. What a scalp it would be and I know I can beat him, I have done it before."

Jones is back on the box keen to put on a better show than the last time he played on television, letting a 3-1 lead slip to lose 6-5 to Brendan Dolan in the Players Championship finals.

He said: "Finishing has been the crook of my game, it's easy to snatch at shots when you are under pressure, but the scoring has always been there.

"There's no way I should have lost against Brendan, I don't know how I did. It should have been a 6-1 victory, 6-2 at the most."
