Former Warwickshire cricketer Tom Allin dies at the age of 28

Tributes have been paid to former Warwickshire cricketer Tom Allin, who has died aged 28.

The bowler also palyed for Shropshire side Shrewsbury Cricket Club, while on the books of Warwickshire.

Police say Allin was found at the base of a bridge near his home in Bideford, Devon, on Monday. The circumstances of his death are being investigated but are not being treated as suspicious.

His death is the second to strike cricket in a matter of days, following the passing of Sussex' Matthew Hobden, who was 22.

Allin played one first-class match and one List A game for Warwickshire before returning to his native Devon in 2013, after six years with the county.

He also represented Cardiff MCCU and Devon, playing for the latter against Shropshire at Shrewsbury in their Unicorns Championship game last year.

A statement on Warwickshire's website read: "Everyone at Edgbaston is immensely saddened by the news.

"Tom was an incredibly popular member of the professional squad during his six years with Warwickshire, and he made one first class and one List A appearance before returning to his native Devon at the end of the 2013 season.

"The thoughts of all at Warwickshire County Cricket Club are with Tom's family and friends, and we would ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time."

Former Shrewsbury team-mates paid tribute to Allin on Twitter, with Edward Barnard posting: "More terrible news... Thoughts are with Tommy Allin's family, we were very lucky to have him #salop #onthefields #rip!"

Dan Manders meanwhile posted: "Another stark reminder of just how short life is. Top lad who always made me smile and who was brilliant for @shrewsburycc #ripmuscles"

Jason Ratcliffe, assistant chief executive of the Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA), meanwhile described Allin as a valued member of the organisation, adding: "Our condolences go to Tom's family, particularly his father Tony who is also a PCA member from his own playing career with Glamorgan in 1976."
