Reigning champions fall to predecessors

Birmingham League champions West Bromwich Dartmouth went down to a 22-run defeat to Shrewsbury in a clash of the Premier Division heavyweights.

Ed Barnard (43) top-scored in a Shrewsbury total of 230 with Aqsad Ali taking 3-32 for Dartmouth, who were dismissed for 208, despite 55 from Basit Zaman.

Kidderminster Victoria were also among the opening-day winners.

Vics took 20 points from a five-wicket win in Herefordshire after chasing down a target of 238-6 set by Brockhampton.

Nathan Round (82no) and Matt Pardoe (73) led the chase as Kidderminster cruised home with eight overs to spare.

Wolverhampton (191) were on the end of a heavy defeat to Knowle & Dorridge (345-5).

In Division One, Old Hill made a losing start as they crashed by 131 runs to Attock (340-7), with Qamar Khan (164) hitting the highest individual score of the day.

In reply, chasing a revised target of 329, Old Hill finished on 209-9, thanks to Jimmy Howell (50) and Hamza Ahmed (48).

Relegated Walsall raced to a four-wicket success at Oswestry with more than nine overs in hand in pursuit of the hosts' total of 275.

A second-wicket stand of 151 between James Middleton (117) and Tim Maxfield (85) eased Walsall home.

Himley (171) lost by 82 runs against Wellington (253-8).

Jamie Turner took 4-63 for Himley, who were given a good start by Worcestershire's Tom Kohler-Cadmore (61) before their innings fell away. Smethwick were beaten by 79 runs against Bromsgrove.

Halesowen (198) made a losing start against high-scoring Tamworth (272-6) in Division Two.

Skipper Faisal Shahid hit 64, but his team-mates were unable to get to grips with leg-spinner James Gray (7-33).

Brewood were no matches for Sutton Coldfield in a rain-affected game. James Hunt scored an unbeaten 55 for Sutton Coldfield, who totalled 173-5 in 39 overs.

Chasing a revised Duckworth-Lewis target of 158, Brewood crashed to 85 all out with Steven Howard taking 4-16.

Penkridge overcame Stourbridge (99-8) by 66 runs in another rain-affected match, while

Wombourne (171) suffered a narrow 23-run defeat to visitors Coventry & North Warwick.

Walsall claimed a weekend double over Shropshire sides as they powered into the next round of the ECB National Club Championship.

After starting their Birmingham League Division One campaign with victory over Oswestry on Saturday, the Gorway men produced an eye-catching display to beat Premier Division Shrewsbury yesterday.

Skipper David Powles led by example as Walsall booked a place in round two of the competition.

Powles struck an unbeaten 89 to guide his side to a challenging total of 254-6 from 45 overs. Opener James Middleton offered support as he followed up his century on Saturday with 46.

In reply, Shrewsbury were dismissed for 182 in the 41st over. Daniel Bowker was the star for Walsall with the ball, claiming 3-16.

Wombourne crashed out of the competition at the first stage after being on the receiving end of a power-packed performance from Barnt Green.

The Worcestershire side dismissed their visitors for 139 with Ben Hudson (33), Ian Walker (28) and Sajid Nazir (29) offering some resistance.

Barnt Green wasted little time chasing down their target thanks to a blistering innings from Sam Cheshire.

He plundered an unbeaten 83 from just 26 balls as the hosts won by eight wickets inside 11 overs. Old Hill also bowed out despite a stunning display with the ball by Nigel Davenport.

The off-spinner bagged 7-22 to help shoot out Walmley for 209. But that total proved beyond Old Hill as they were restricted to 169-9 in reply.
