The 13-year-old traveller, the country's best for his age at 40kg, travelled to Swansea to represent his country at the weekend,

As the host nation, Wales got two picks to make up the semi-finals and Mongan, who boxes out of Priory Park in Dudley, took the pair of them out.

First, on Saturday, he made Shaun Brown quit on his stool at the end of the first round, after a relentless barrage of pressure.

Brown had his head rocked back with flurries of punches before his corner, examining their fighter at the end of the round, pulled him out.

Then, on Sunday, a lovely screw shot saw a right uppercut sink Scott Burgess to the canvas, at just the midway point of the opening session.

James, the new Three Nations Schools champion, with his dad Michael Mongan.

Burgess had to answer a standing eight count from the shot but was in trouble again from Mongan's quick-fire attacks, forcing the referee to step in.

Mongan is now waiting to find out whether he will follow his older brother Jerry, who won a 54kg Schools national title last year, into the autumn's European Championships.

Trainer Warren Davies said: "I think it will be a couple of weeks before they let us know, so we will keep James ticking over until then.

"Our gym is actually closed, at the minute, as it's being refurbished, so we are getting James in where we can and then taking him out for sparring.

"If he's not picked, James will have a break. He deserves one, because he's done well this year, but the Euros would be a great experience for him.

"The kid can do anything, he can fight and box. The first lad was supposed to be a slick southpaw and it took James no time at all to figure him out.

"He couldn't have done any more to impress the selectors, with two first round stoppages. He was throwing powerful shots at angles for fun."
