Sam Eggington smashes Shayne Singleton

Stourbridge's Sam Eggington claimed the WBC International Silver welterweight title with a fifth round stoppage of Shayne Singleton at the Hull Ice Arena.

It was another display of raw power from the 21-year-old who impressed ahead of Matchroom's scheduled Birmingham show in May,

Champion Singleton started well using his slick skills to tag Eggington, but the challenger's much revered power that was evident even in the early exchanges on Saturday night.

Singleton tagged Eggington in the second and foolishly called the power puncher on.

'The Savage' needed no invitation and put Singleton flat on his backside with a spiteful right that shook the Colne man to his core.

Singleton did well to recover but continued to play to Eggington's strengths, standing in front of him rather than looking to move his opponent round.

Singleton, while arguably winning the early rounds due to the amount of shots landed, always looked in danger of being a punch away from the canvas at the unforgiving fists of 'Sam the Man.'

And so it proved in the fifth when a short right put Singleton on to the seat of his pants once more. Shaken, the champion took an eight count.

Sensing victory, Eggington swarmed and caught Singleton with another chopping right that put 'The Pain' down again. The referee had seen enough and awarded Eggington victory and the WBC-recognised strap.

Eggington said afterwards: "It became a brawl and I always fancy myself in that kind of fight.

"I knew I'd hurt him in the second but he kept coming forward and that played into my hands.

"I was a bit nervous about this one, knowing that there's the big Birmingham show coming up but I got through it and have another belt to my name."
