Tommy Hearns: I've given up on fighting

Tommy Hearns today insisted he's finally hung up his gloves and has no plans to make a comeback at the age of 56.

'The Hitman' told the Express & Star in 2010 that he was coming out of retirement and he was talking about a boxing exhibition with Floyd Mayweather Snr on.

But Hearns, during a sportsman's dinner at Bar Sport's Premier Suite in Cannock Town Centre, confirmed he's finally called time, writes Craig Birch.

The five-weight world champion, who became the first man to win global titles in four different divisions, admits he struggles to forget about fighting.

'The Motor City Cobra' last campaigned as a cruiser when he was 45, but conceded he always knew heavyweight was a step up too far.

He said: "I am retired now, that's for sure. I haven't thought about boxing for a couple of years. I won't get back in the ring.

"It wasn't an easy decision to make, it's been hard, even today I keep myself in shape and consider myself able to fight again. I know I could do it.

"It's a big void in my life and it's taken time for me to enjoy my retirement, but I do things like go out and watch a baseball game.

"I wanted another world title at cruiserweight, which I considered an achievement the first time around, but heavyweight was too much for me.

"Moving up the divisions was pretty easy, I always felt comfortable. God blessed me with the ability to punch and I always used it in the ring."
