Tommy Ghent told he will go the distance

Tommy Ghent has been told to expect to go the distance with Jay Morris in Birmingham on Friday - but Ryan Corrigan will miss the show through injury.

The Coseley duo, trained by Paul Gough at Priory Park Amateur Boxing Club, were both due to compete on ex-pro Tommy Owens' show at the Paragon Hotel.

But Corrigan has damaged his elbow in training and has been forced to pull out, leaving Coseley cohort Ghent as the Black Country representative on the bill.

The highly-rated welterweight, 20, steps up to a six-rounder against the 'Isle of Wight Assassin' Jay Morris, who holds a a victory over Curtis Woodhouse.

The 35-year-old took Brummie Tommy Langford's best shots the last time he boxed in Birmingham, going the distance on the same bill as Ghent in February.

Now they clash at a different venue in the Second City and Ghent by his corner to forget about adding to the three stoppages in his flawless four wins so far.

Gough said: "I have seen how durable Jay is and what he would bring to the table for Tom, that's why he's such an ideal opponent for him at this stage.

"To be fair, Tom has not gone out to stop the kid in any of the fights he has had, they have just happened. Stoppages are over-rated, really.

"People are not living with his power - Jay will. I believe Tom will get a good six-rounds in and he won't have it all his own way, either."

The boxers from Gough's Priory Park base then move on to Wolverhampton Civic Hall, where four are booked on the card for Saturday July 6.

Dudley's Ryan Aston could win his first title, the International Masters middleweight belt, against Portuguese-born Spaniard Yuri Pompilio.

Tipton's Ricky Summers boxes for the first time since his mother passed away earlier this year, at light heavyweight against the durable Tony Shields.

Welterweight Lance Brooks will be looking to kick on from his comeback fight in March after three months out of the ring, this time against Ross Payne.

And Bloxwich's Luke Paddock, a light welter, appears to be growing in statue according to his trainer having, like Brooks, clocked up two points wins so far.

Gough said: "Ryan is almost back to his best, we are getting him back into the title picture and I believe after this fight he will back to where he was.

"We left Ricky until the time was right, but we are delighted he's back. When he keeps to his natural assets, I think he can be a big force.

"Lance is looking strong, he's getting more and more sparring under his belt now and that's what he needs, proper time in the ring.

"Luke is impressing me, he's taking on board what we are saying and he's ticking all of the boxes, by doing the things that we want him to do."
