James Austin today revealed his pride for his adopted country after being selected for Scotland's Commonwealth Games squad.

The Lichfield Olympian will compete for the home nation in Glasgow this summer after the judo team was announced yesterday.

He qualifies through residency having lived in Edinburgh for over the five years needed to be eligible.

Austin trains with Judo Scotland and insisted the support he has received since his move was a major factor in his decision.

"I'm really proud. It was an honour to be asked to compete so to get selection is great," said the 31-year-old, who has been based north of the border for almost seven years.

"The guys up here have been a massive support, Judo Scotland and work – who have let me have all the time off I need.

"After I'd spent the five years here I've always been asked who I would fight for, but I've always been made to feel at home here."

Austin, who is a mental health advocacy worker, fought at London 2012 and will compete at the -100kgs weight. He lost in the first round to Japan's Takamasa Anai two years ago but battled back from nine months out last year after shoulder surgery in January 2013.

He is joined in the squad by Shrewsbury's Sarah Adlington and fellow Olympian and friend Euan Burton – who he hopes to meet in the final now he is back to full fitness.

Austin said: "I didn't come back to the level I thought I would. I was physically fit but mentally I was in the place I was but I'm back there now. Recently I've been pleased with my performance.

"With the way I have been fighting I can be more than a match for anyone. The Commonwealth Games aim is for a medal and I don't see any reason why it can't be gold.

"It's a slightly smaller venue but the Scotland team is really strong and they're aiming for the most successful Commonwealth Games ever.

"Euan is in -100kgs and he's a good friend and a good coach and hopefully we'll be in the final together."
