Rio Olympics 2016 - Frustration for sailor Alison Young ahead of final race

Wolverhampton's Alison Young won the final laser radial race on Saturday – but it did little to put a smile on her face.

Young kicked things off with a 16th-place finish on day eight of competition in Rio 2016, an all too familiar feeling as she has struggled to get to grips with the conditions.

But in the second race – which marked the final outing before Monday's medal race starting at 5pm – everything finally clicked into place as the 29-year-old led from start to finish to take the win.

However, Young arrived in Brazil having won the Laser Radial World Championships earlier this year and would have hoped to be celebrating a victory sooner than this.

And she wasn't exactly popping the champagne corks as she heads into Monday's medal race in eighth, and some way off the battle for the medals.

"My tactics worked out for once, which was good," Young said.

"It was nice to finish the opening series with a bullet but the rest of the regatta has been very disappointing.

"I'll go into the medal race and aim to win the medal race and finish the regatta on a little bit of a high.

"I expect it to be a tough race because the girls who are fighting for the medals are sailing great.

"But I have just got to try and put a good race in there.

"This does give me confidence and I can take some positives away but overall the whole week has been very disappointing."

Only the top ten boats qualify for the medal race, where points are doubled, but this alone is not why Young – who finished fifth at London 2012 – travelled to Rio.

But while a podium spot is out of her reach she intends to use today to prepare as best she can for one final outing, with teammate Nick Dempsey competing in his RS:X medal race already guaranteed the silver medal.

"His race is on the medal race course so I will see how the course goes in preparation for my medal race."
