Stourbridge's Nick Fullwell gave world No 1 Michael van Gerwen a run for his money before bowing out of the Gibraltar Darts Trophy.

Fullwell was the only darter from the West Midlands to get past the first round of the PDC European Tour event,

The formidable 'MvG' laid in wait but Fullwell enjoyed his own moments, such as when he struck first blood to break the deadlock.

Van Gerwen then raced into a commanding 5-2 lead but, with the crowd coming onto his side, Fullwell pulled it back to 5-4.

The 46-year-old pushed the Dutchman all the way, until his opponent closed out the contest on double 18 to go through.

Fullwell, who doesn't have a Pro Tour card, was included in the line-up after coming through an open qualifier in March.

He had dumped out host nation qualifier Antony Lopez 6-2 in the first round, where Wolverhampton's Wayne Jones was eliminated.

'The Wanderer' only had himself to blame, after missing a staggering 13 match darts and allowing John Henderson to creep past him 6-5.

Jones was guaranteed £1,000 in prize money just for taking part, though, with Fullwell picking up £1,500 for his run.
