Hankey prevailed 5-1 from their quarter-final clash in the last eight out of more than 1,000 players at the Normandy Cosmopolitan Hotel in Renfrew.

Hughes, since his breakthrough semi-final at the World Championship, has won all of his groups on the non-televised 'floor' circuit and retained the Romanian Classic, writes Craig Birch.

The Black Country thrower got up and running here with 3-0 whitewashes over Kevin MacAfee and Scott McConville, with a 3-1 win over Stuart Lavendar getting him out of Group 33.

'Yozza' then defeated Stephen Lennon 4-1 as play was upgraded to the best-of-seven format, before shutting out John Eyre 4-0 at the last 32 stage.

The 29-year-old saw off Lakeside quarter-finalist Dennis Harbour 4-2 to set up the clash with two-time world champion Hankey.

'The Count' went on to lose 5-1 to title winner Danny Noppert, who beat Dean Reynolds in the final 6-0, as the legs were upped again.

Hughes also reached the final of the mixed triples alongside Paula Jacklin and Chris Fider, losing out to Rachael Brooks, Sven Wens and Day Cardinaal.

County players Mark Craddock and Danny Key also won their groups in the men's singles, emerging from sections 41 and 39 respectively.

The West Midlands' Craddock whitewashed Ralph Hurst, Martin Brophy, Michael MacLean and Bruce Montgomery to win his board, before a 4-3 defeat to Euan Callander in the last 64.

Staffordshire's Key shut out Ronnie Jackson 3-0 before 3-2 results over Andrew Davidson and Robert Jackson, either side of a 3-1 verdict against Brian Lokken. He then lost 4-2 to Harbour.
