Walsall net ‘solid’ defender James O’Connor

Walsall today unveiled versatile Derby defender James O’Connor as their first summer signing.

Walsall boss Dean Smith

The 29-year-old Brummie has penned a one-year deal and helps fill the void left by centre-back and captain Andy Butler, who joined Sheffield United last month.

An FA Youth Cup winner in 2002 with Villa, where he started his career, he was an integral part of Sean O’Driscoll’s Doncaster team that won the Football League Trophy in 2006-07 and promotion to the Championship in 2007-08, spending four years as a regular in the second tier.

Manager Dean Smith said: “We’ve signed an extremely reliable and solid defender. I played alongside him at Port Vale and he’s worked with Richard O’Kelly for a number of years, so we know the character he is and what he’ll bring.

“There were a lot of teams interested in him, but I’m delighted he’s chosen to come here. It certainly is a big bonus for us.”

O’Connor said: “I’m delighted to be here. It feels right and I’m looking forward to working under a bright, young manager in Dean and working with Richard.”

Another one year contract ? It doesn't help with Deans long term plan just a stop gap signing. That said it is a good signing but as others have noted on other posts STRIKERS are what's needed

Dean as Graham states and all other saddlers supporters WE NEED STRIKERS are we again going to wait to see what scraps are left by other club and try to pick them up on a free transfer surly with the players we have shipped out of the club we could find a bob or two to pay a fee for a striker I like many other fans am a season ticket holder along with my son and we want to see committed people at the club that can take us forward and that means from the chairman down to the supporters we pay much needed income into the saddlers and it is only right that we are treated fairly in seeing our money invested into the playing side of the club Like Graham and many other supporters we want to see good entertaining football but without a strike force that is far better than last year I cant see us finishing in the top half so come on Dean get some STRIKERS in PLEASE

STRIKERS NEEDED URGENTLY ?????????????????????????????????

First signing? What happened to gk? None the less a good signing but will echo the grumbles about 1 year deal And lack of striker. We need to change policy and start signing people up on 2+ years if they have potential/proven players.

Looking forward to seeing the announcement of febian brandy being signed for an undisclosed fee(guessing thats the 2nd player deano said we are close to signing)
