Ben Purkiss signs new contract at Walsall

The 30-year-old right-back, who can also play in the centre of defence, has committed his immediate future to the Saddlers after holding talks with boss Dean Smith.

He becomes the first player to sign this summer following player-coach Dean Holden. Smith is continuing negotiations with James Chambers, Andy Taylor, Kieron Morris and Jake Heath.

Purkiss made 16 appearances for the Saddlers last term and while he often found himself behind Chambers in the pecking order, his versatility and consistency means Smith views him as a valuable member of the squad.

"I am very pleased to have signed this new deal," said Purkiss. "It means that I can now start planning for the new season.

"It's always important at this time of the year to be able to take stock, look at the areas of my game that need work and use the summer to do it so that I can return fresh and ready to hit the ground running.

"I always set myself personal targets, be it on a game-by-game basis or for the season as a whole.

"You have to be careful not to make those targets unrealistic, but already I have a few things in mind for next season.

"I'm looking forward to the new season; there'll be some new faces coming into the club as we look to build upon the previous campaign both individually and as a collective."

Purkiss started his career with hometown club, Sheffield United, before going on to serve the likes of Gainsborough Trinity, York City, Oxford United and Hereford United.

He joined The Saddlers in the summer of 2012 and has gone on to become a popular figure, who claimed the Community Player of the Season award last term.

"We have a good nucleus here," added Purkiss. "The goalkeeper is as good as anyone at this level and there is a strong foundation with plenty of quality.

"There are areas that clearly need attention, but the Gaffer is aware of that and is working hard to address the situation."
