Dean Smith wants talks over Walsall FC aces Craig Westcarr and Sam Mantom

Boss Dean Smith today revealed he was set for talks with Sam Mantom and Craig Westcarr over their Walsall futures.

The on-loan duo were due to return to their parent clubs today after playing in last night’s 2-0 win over Portsmouth.

Albion loanee Mantom and Chesterfield striker Westcarr have helped the Saddlers to four wins in their last five games to shoot them up to 14th in League One.

And Smith will now consider their futures over the weekend.

He said: “I’m going to speak to both of them. I’ll have a chat with them, we like them both, but we’ll have a chat and see what they are looking to do as well.

“Both of them have done well and it’s coincided with a decent run of form where they’ve played well and helped us.

“I never really wanted to talk to them before the game. We’ve had a really busy period and I didn’t want to take their concentration off the games they were playing but we can talk now.”

Mantom has made 10 appearances, scoring once, while Westcarr has featured seven times since joining in November.

Mantom admitted on Thursday he feels he has no future at Albion and Westcarr is in limbo at League Two Chesterfield.

The pair would stay given the chance and Smith’s transfer pot was boosted as he will take a slice of the £30,000 earned from last night’s televised Sky clash.

First-half goals from Febian Brandy and Will Grigg won it for the Saddlers as they moved 14 points away from the bottom four. It marked Smith’s two years in charge and he admitted the milestone almost passed him by.

“I didn’t know until someone told me,” he said, with the Saddlers not playing again until next Sunday’s trip to Preston.

“I’m glad I didn’t remember it though because I don’t normally remember my wedding anniversary.

“It was good. We’ve had five games in 13 days and to win four of them is magnificent for the players.

“But we won’t look too far ahead. Every game in this league is tough. We make sure we’re consistent in our performances and how we prepare and we’re getting the rewards now.

“We’ve got a little break now. They’ll get a little rest.”

NO NO NO We don't want Westcarr, he can't head a ball, he can't run , can't score, and he is keeping Bowerman out of the team.

Where has the '' We only want players to come who are better than what we already have'' gone ????????????????????????????

Thought Westcarr did really well in the hole last night. Felt he was struggling when he first came, playing on the right. Now he is in the centre, he looks a much better player. Could have had a couple of goals last night, but needs his shooting boots! He held the ball up really well, bringing Paterson, Mantom & Brandy into the game! Never been a fan of Chambers, but again he did a great job last night, breaking up the play and playing the holding rule really well. well done lads. Job well done! UTS!

We need Westcar! He has more ability than Grigg & Bowerman plus experience and goals will soon come.

Westcarr was awfull against Portsmouth and Stevenage 2 home games in a row every time the ball was passed to him the momentum just hit a wall and counter attacks slowed down not to mention he missed a couple of absolute sitters!! Bring Back Bowerman!! Mantom i feel would certainly be worth keeping around.

I think we especially need to wrap up Westcarr. It's no coincidence that Grigg, Brandy and Paterson are getting in amongst the goals since his arrival. He doesn't do a glorious job but he's intelligent with his movement, he can hold the ball up and he does the simple things very effectively and helps to link play as well as having a lot more experience than most of our squad and gives us a different dimension by allowing the ball to stick for us up top, something which Bowerman doesn't really offer as he's built similarly to Grigg.

Westcarr's involvement in the team has coincided with a good run of form. He is an out and out striker by nature and a very clever player, who links the team together well. I would sign him up without hesitation. Bowerman isn't good enough yet, he is a poacher and all the best poachers in the league can do the ugly side of being a forward and run the line too, like Ryan Lowe and Izale Mcleod, we look a severely weakened team when he's up front. Just look how many times Westcarr brings the ball down on his chest and lays it off to others in our team, it keeps attacking moves flowing. Being a striker isn't just about scoring goals, although I admit he could have had a hat trick on Friday night, it shows promise that he is getting into the right positions and we are creating chances.

Not sure which match some people watched on Friday. Westcarr did miss a couple of chances but his work was good and should be signed

didnt think much of westcarr untill i watched the match back works well and opens up space well

Agree with the positives about Westcarr. Someone who can hold the ball up at his feet and in the air is vital up front at all levels. He has linked play up well against better opposition than Pompey were on Friday and he has pace to go with that of Paterson and Brandy. Obviously the other thing is that by keeping possession up front the ball is not coming back at the back four with the regularity that it has been at times hence we have managed to keep a couple of clean sheets recently.

Manton - no brainer if we can get him. Westcarr ?? doesnt win balls in the air - lacks pace-cannot (and has not) score goals - is not good enough to get into league 2 side !! - he did link up reasonably well but more as an attacking midfielder than a striker.

Griggs and Brandy played well together - Griggs did not depend on Westcarr for his goals. We do not yet know what Bowerman is capable of except for his goalscoring record - since he is not playing !! - Any striker worthy of the name can only score goals if he is played !!
