A new roof on Stafford Rangers' Shed End has been approved by council planners, with the club hailing it as a fitting way to celebrate their 140th anniversary.

The canopy, which will measure 4.7 metres at the rear and 6.7 metres at the front, was approved at last night's Stafford Council planning meeting.

Supporters had raised £10,000 to get the project up and running.

Proceeds from the club's new lottery will also go towards any shortfall in funds for the roof.

Delighted Gary Cater, Rangers' director of operations, said he hoped the build would get underway as soon as possible.

He added: "This will be fantastic for all the fans.

"The application has received overwhelming support from residents, the rest of the borough and from overseas."

The Shed End is currently a terrace with no roof.

Along with keeping fans dry in bad weather conditions, the new roof will also meet league regulations as they continue to chase promotion to the National Conference League.
