The Boro' top scorer netted the only goal of the match 10 minutes after entering the Vale Park pitch, sending hundreds of travelling Rangers supporters into ecstasy.

Peter Till started lively down the left for Stafford, his cross leading to a Stuart McNaught strike that flew wide. Christian Dacres could only steer his header wide from another Till delivery.

James Dance was denied by Darren Chadwick's last-ditch challenge on the quarter of an hour before Jordan Johnson drove wide after some good footwork.

Boro' came closest to breaking the deadlock on the half-hour through Levi Reid – the midfielder thundered a volley against Ben Chapman's crossbar via a nick off a Leek defender.

But Leek could have been ahead going into the interval. Stafford struggled to clear a free-kick and 23-goal Tim Grice was slipped in, only to fire horribly across Adam Whitehouse.

Midway through the second half Reid saw a deflected strike fly wide from distance and from the resulting corner young Port Vale loanee Nathan Smith's scramble was somehow blocked by Anthony Danylyk on the line.

With five minutes remaining Grice looped a header just wide as Leek made a rare foray forward.

With seconds remaining, Ryan Edmunds burst down the right, and his low cross was flicked on by fellow sub Jazz Luckie for Cope to tap home the winner.
