Andy Mutch was this afternoon back in management after being named caretaker boss of Stafford Rangers.

more The former Wolves striker was appointed in the wake of Greg Clowes' sacking and will take charge of tomorrow's home game with Marine.

Mutch, who has been out of management since leaving Northwich Victoria last November, is following in the footsteps of legendary Wolves striker partner Steve Bull who managed Rangers for 10 months in 2008.

His first task will be to stabilise a side who have lost their first seven league fixtures and are rooted to the foot of the Evo-Stik Northern League Premier.

A club statement read: "The board have appointed Andy Mutch as caretaker manager of Stafford Rangers FC with immediate effect.

"The board will now concentrate on the selection process for a permanent appointment."

Rangers officials have confirmed there is no timeframe on finding a successor to Clowes, who was sacked along with assistant Dorrian Garner and coach Mick Hathaway yesterday following Saturday's 3-0 home defeat at Chorley.

Mutch, who scored 96 goals in 288 appearances for Wolves, had spells as assistant with both Telford and Morecambe before becoming boss of Vauxhall Motors in 2007. He has also managed Burscough and then troubled Northwich, who played their home games at Stafford's Marston Road home during his spell in charge.

Rangers will be hoping Mutch can guide them through a difficult period as they hunt for a permanent manager. Rangers have yet to pick up a point.
