Their hard-earned win left them eight points from safety with three matches left to play.

It also lifted Colin Gordon's relegation battlers off the foot of the table for the first time since late February.

Harriers, who missed a second half penalty, had a long range shot from Elton Ngwatala saved by goalkeeper Sam Johnson after two minutes, before the visitors started to create opportunities of their own.

Firstly, Jake Hibbs had a fierce goalbound drive deflected for an unproductive corner before recalled Harriers goalkeeper Dean Snedker had an awkward moment dealing with a header by Hamza Bencherif.

Hibbs followed up just shortly afterwards with a well struck 25-yard free kick which forced a smart save from diving Snedker.

Kidderminster responded with a lively run through the visiting defence by Gurjit Singh who set up Whitfield for a powerful drive which whizzed narrowly high and wide.

Harriers forged ahead on 49 minutes when a long crossfield pass by Lewis Kinsella was superbly brought under control by Whitfield, who slotted the ball past Johnson for his sixth goal of the season.

Kidderminster had a golden chance to stretch their lead in the 67th minute when they were awarded a penalty after substitute Dan Sweeney was fouled by Bencherif.

Ngwatala stepped up to take the kick but his weak shot was easily saved by Johnson.
