Stafford Rangers manager Neil Kitching remains upbeat despite seeing his table-topping team suffer a setback in a 1-0 home defeat against title rivals Shaw Lane.

In a game of few chances, the South Yorkshire side went away with the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One South points.

Striker James Walshaw headed home a 63rd-minute corner that home keeper Adam Whitehouse failed to cut out.

Kitching said: "I don't think that the result will have any bearing on who wins the title at the end of the season.

"It was a war of attrition, to be honest, and I didn't think the game had any real quality to it throughout the 90 minutes.

"We were in a good position going in level at half-time after playing the first half against the wind.

"But I was disappointed with our second-half performance when we failed to put any decent phases of play together in the attacking sense.

"We were beaten by one set-piece mistake but credit to them. They make it difficult for teams, but then so do we."

Walsall loanee Levi Rowley flashed a shot just wide in the first-half, but the Boro's best chance fell just before the interval when striker Ben Haseley blazed over the bar when well placed.

Rangers suffered a further setback when centre-back Wayne Daniel limped off in the second-half with a calf injury, that could keep him out of the side for the next few games.
