Don Goodman and Steve Daley help raise money for Darlaston Town

Two former footballing stars came together to help raise funds for an historic football club.

Don Goodman and Steve Daley were on hand as footballing memorabilia went under the hammer to raise money for Darlaston Town (1874) FC.

The original club folded last year after 139 years but a new club has been formed with a view to entering the league next season.

Among the lots that went under the hammer at Darlaston Town Hall on Friday night was a signed Kenny Dalglish Liverpool shirt, which sold for £120. There were signed England and Wolves shirts as well as a West Bromwich Albion shirt signed by former baggies star Tony 'Bomber' Brown.

Also for sale was a colour photograph of the 1966 England World Cup winning squad signed by nine of the team and a signed Paul Gascoigne and ex Wolves striker Steve Bull framed colour photo from when they were playing for England. A number of signed pictures from a scrapbook put together by Wolves legend Bert Williams were also included in the auction, which were donated by Normal Lester, from Willenhall.

Don Goodman, who played for West Bromwich Albion, Wolves and Walsall said: "These sorts of clubs are the lifeblood of football and it's clear to see that it is still important in the area.

"I've been told it is one of the oldest clubs in the country as well so it's fantastic that people are supporting them." Steve Daley, who played for Wolves and Walsall before managing Bilston Town, said: "

It's absolutely a club that people in the area need and there have been some good players who have gone on to play in the football league who have started off at Darlaston, and that's what people need. A good grass roots club like this is."

A fundraising committee was set up during September last year to generate £5,000 to cover costs, rent, registration fees and kits in a bid to try and save the long-running club.

That target has since been reached and bosses are looking to raise another £5,000 to cover running costs.
