Jack Byrne faces Harriers fitness race

Kidderminster Harriers midfielder Jack Byrne will be given a late chance to prove his fitness before the game against Hayes & Yeading at Aggborough.

Byrne is struggling with a knee injury picked up in the Boxing Day win at Forest Green, forcing him to miss the return game on New Year’s Day.

And manager Steve Burr may decide Tuesday’s trip to Gateshead, giving the midfielder a further rest, is a more optimistic target for his return.

Harriers have already played away at tomorrow’s visitors but Hayes & Yeading are groundsharing with Woking, playing at the Kingfield Stadium.

The second-from-bottom side lost 3-1 to Burr’s men in November and are the underdogs again, thanks to the hosts’ 10-match unbeaten run.

But the Harriers boss won’t be underestimating their opponents as they look to break into the Blue Square Premier play-off places.

Burr said: “Despite their current league position, I felt Hayes were a good side when we played against them down at Woking earlier on this season.

“So I am a bit surprised to see them struggling in the relegation zone. It’s proving to be a tough season for them.

“It’s obviously difficult having no home or base of their own as the work on their ground continues.

“Effectively they are playing all of their games away from home and that cannot be easy.

“All that said, though, we know we must keep concentrating on ourselves and all our efforts will be on continuing our good run of form.

“The important thing will again be for us to get another important three points and move on.”
