Wolves recall Shrewsbury ace Ryan Giles from loan spell

Giles is now in contention for Wolves' Premier League clash at Southampton on Saturday after boss Nuno Espirito Santo opted to end his loan spell at the League One side.

The Express & Star understands that injury doubts over left-sided duo Ruben Vinagre (hamstring) and Diogo Jota (calf) - and a lack of imminent signings are the reason for his January return.

Wolves wing-back Jonny Castro-Otto and left forward Pedro Neto are expected to retain their spots in the starting XI, with Giles anticipated to boost the bench.

It is a blow to Sam Ricketts' Shrewsbury side, who now head to League One side Fleetwood Town without one of their key men.

Ricketts said: "Wolves have suffered a few injuries so he has been recalled,” said Sam. “He will go straight into their match-day squad. That is great for him but a little bit disappointing for us."

England Under-20 flyer Giles has made 25 appearances for Ricketts’ side this season, scoring a rocket on his debut against Portsmouth on the opening day of the season.

The Telford youngster suffered a knee injury in October that kept him out of Shrewsbury’s starting reckoning for some time until a return between Christmas and new year.

Giles then put in a stunning display at Championship side Bristol City in the FA Cup at the turn of the year.

It means a late re-think for Ricketts for the trip to take on a Fleetwood side who sit in 11th, three points and five places better off than Town.

And ex-Wolves player Ricketts is hopeful the youngster can return at the end of this month.

He said: “We should be very proud of how Ryan has developed during his time with us. Maybe he will be able to come back. If not, it has been great to have him for six months and we wish him all the best.

“If you asked Ryan, he would tell you he has loved his time here. Although he’s excited to go back and be around the first-team there, he was eager to stay and be involved in what we are doing.

“We will be ready for the game but Ryan will be a miss. We have players who are ready to play and compete for that jersey.”
