Walsall to back League Two salary cap in vote today

Walsall are expected to vote in favour of a League Two salary cap when clubs meet with EFL chiefs today.

The Express & Star understands that all fourth tier clubs will vote on the cap today as football undergoes changes in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

It is proposed that the flat wage cap limit in League Two will be £1.5m, which rises to £2.5m in League One.

Many feel that the limit will allow for a more level playing field in the lower leagues, meaning Walsall’s rivals can not spend drastically on player wages.

The Saddlers have been in favour of a cap ‘in principle’ for some time, but they were waiting on the details of the proposal and how it would be implemented before committing either way.

It is believed that they will now vote in favour of the cap in today’s vote.

Walsall chairman Leigh Pomlett has previously spoken publicly about a wage cap, citing his preference to see one introduced.

His hope is that it would bring an end to the ‘stupidity’ of clubs spending beyond their means and going out of business. That, in turn, will favour Walsall and their wage structure.

The vote was due to take place on July 29, but it was pushed back by the governing body.

League One clubs are expected to vote on the cap tomorrow, with rivals Shrewsbury having already expressed their desire to vote in favour of it.
