Elijah Adebayo: Do what it takes to keep Walsall afloat

Walsall striker Elijah Adebayo believes the club should do ‘whatever is right’ to keep them afloat during the coronavirus pandemic – even if it means a potential wage cap.

With the League Two season expected to be shelved and the final league table decided on an unweighted points per game system, clubs in the fourth tier have had to fight to survive through an uncertain financial period.

The Walsall players are currently on furlough and with reports suggesting that wage caps could be implemented across the Football League, Adebayo insists the club’s future comes first.

“It should go whatever way that is going to keep the club going,” he said.

“A lot of people are worried about clubs not being able to sustain, but whatever is right for Walsall to keep them afloat, is the action they should take. Whatever is right to keep Walsall going, because that’s what we want. Whatever the chairman decides is the best thing, is what will happen and what should happen.

“At the end of the day, it’s the club that matters, not the players.”

Chairman Leigh Pomlett has been widely praised by fans for his work at keeping the club intact in recent months and Adebayo believes the right people are at the helm.

“I don’t have too much knowledge with what goes on with the directors, but I know that the club is definitely being run very, very well,” he added.

“We’re hoping that it says that way, but I can’t fault anything with the club, it’s running well and long may that continue.

“Once we’re back we can give back to the club on the pitch, for how it’s been run nice and smoothly.”
